A woman in Ottawa, Canada was given a free set of replacement dentures after she accidentally flushed her lower dentures. Originally, she was told that unless she could pay for her own dentures, she would have to wait until 2016 when the city and the province would pitch in to replace the dentures. But then a local denture dentist stepped in and provided the replacement dentures for free.
The woman, 64-year-old Margaret Lanouette, made a living as an exotic dancer when she was young. She made good money, but she didn’t spend it well. She says she might as well have burned it, she spent it so quickly and poorly. She says she spent a lot of money on cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs, which partly served to wreck her health. She spent 20 years as a dancer, retiring at the age of 39 and becoming a hairdresser. Unfortunately, arthritis in her hands caused her to quit that career.
Now, unable to work, she is on public support, and she had been suffering as an alcoholic, which is what led to her current predicament. Violently ill from drinking, she vomited and lost her dentures in the toilet, accidentally flushing them away.
When local citizens heard of the woman’s predicament, many of them came forward to support her, including a local denture dentist. Initially, he was just going to replace her lower denture, but the economy dentures she had looked terrible, he said, and decided to replace both the upper and lower denture.
Lanouette needed even more help, too, because she was unable to make it to the dentist’s office on her own. Once she missed the bus to make an appointment and another time she made the bus but got lost when she made it to the stop. To help her further, another of the dentist’s patients volunteered to drive Lanouette to and from the office.
Dentures can be expensive to replace, and it’s important to take proper care of them, even when you’re drinking. Don’t leave them behind in a bar, and don’t flush them down the toilet.
