One of the biggest concerns people express about getting dentures is that they won’t be able to eat effectively with them. Researchers have spent a lot of time looking at this problem, so we understand what effective chewing with dentures means. Here are some of the ways that we talk about chewing efficiency for people with or without dentures.
Comminutization, which has the word “minute” in it, is a measure of how well your teeth are able to break down large foods into small particles.
Comminutization studies are not popular with scientists because they are very time consuming. Basically, someone is given a food to eat that starts out with particles of a certain size, resists being dissolved by saliva, and readily breaks into smaller pieces when eaten. Peanuts work pretty well. Then the subject is told to chew a certain number of times, and a sample is taken. They chew some more, and another sample is taken. Eventually, the particle sizes in these different samples are measured.
Comminutization studies show that dentures are not as good at breaking down food as are dental implants or natural teeth. However, we haven’t done comminutization studies of The Denture Fountain of Youth® to compare with traditional dentures.
To try to overcome the limitations of comminutization, dentists have tried to measure chewing efficiency with electromyography (EMG), which measures the effort in your chewing muscles, so we know how much force you are bringing to bear on your food. EMG is a standard tool in neuromuscular dentistry, so it’s normally used in the making of FOY Dentures®, helping us to ensure you have a balanced bite, which can be verified using bite registration.
EMG studies also show that people with dentures do not chew as well as those with dental implants. We haven’t done EMG chewing studies of FOY Dentures® yet.
This is the easiest and best way to measure chewing effectiveness for dentures. Ask people about how well they chew with their dentures and they tell you. This is really the most important assessment to make, because people want their dentures to be comfortable when they chew, and they know best how well their dentures function for eating various types of food.
Our patient satisfaction response for FOY Dentures® has been very encouraging. We have had many people tell us how happy they are with their dentures and how well they work for eating all kinds of food.
