A woman went to an Affordable Dentures practice in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, hoping for just what the name promised, economy dentures. Unfortunately, she found out that these were not always as easy to come by as we might hope for, and she wound up with unwearable dentures and a fight for a refund.
As we have said, economy dentures chains are not always the best for customer service, and this woman was only able to get a refund after a consumer watchdog stepped in. Not everyone is so lucky.
The woman went to Affordable Dentures hoping to get decent dentures at a reasonable price, but she was not ready to have her dentures immediately. Instead, she had to have her teeth pulled in anticipation of getting dentures, which mean there was some delay in getting the procedure rolling. It turns out the delay was highly significant.
As she was recovering from her oral surgery, the woman received a call from Affordable Dentures that she had to come pick up her dentures right away because the office was closing. Apparently, Affordable Dentures was deciding to contract its operation, and the office in Wilkes-Barre was among those slated for closure.
When the woman got her dentures, though, she found out they were unwearable and unattractive. The teeth were too big, making the dentures unattractive and uncomfortable. The denture plate was also too thick, and it had a rough surface on it, further making the dentures uncomfortable to wear.
The office, which, as we said, was closing was unable to help her, so she had to call the corporate office. According to her account, the woman called the corporate office “daily” until she found herself “at wit’s end,” but she was unable to get anyone who would help her.
In desperation, she contacted a consumer advocate, who decided to take up her case.
When the consumer advocate called Affordable Dentures, the chain quickly changed its tune. A Communications Manager at the company, eager to avoid bad press, was able to get the woman a refund “in no time flat.”
This is not the first time we’ve heard of people having to fight for denture refunds from an uncooperative practice, but it also reminds us that corporate dental practices aren’t always as dedicated to the well-being of their patients as they should be. An individual patient can receive terrible dentures, then call and call in an attempt to get a refund, but will be ignored because in the corporate mindset, an individual patient doesn’t count for much.
It’s worth noting that after her experience with Affordable Dentures, this woman went to a local dentist, paid a little more, and received dentures that she described as “beautiful”. Investing in quality dentures is well worth it.
