If you have poor-fitting dentures, you know how hard it is to eat properly. Many of the foods you enjoy are just too hard to eat, and so you skip them in favor of softer and easier-to-eat options. Unfortunately, this may give you a diet made up of a lot of junk food, with few fruits and vegetables. If you’re looking to improve your ability to eat nutritious foods, you may be considering replacing your dentures with implant dentures.
Although implant-supported dentures do make it easier to eat many foods, a new study shows that they don’t necessarily improve your nutritional intake over well-fitting dentures without implants.
If you feel that your dentures don’t fit well, it is likely affecting your nutrition. According to a 2003 study, people with poor-fitting dentures had worse nutrition than people with well-fitting dentures or natural teeth. They had a lower Healthy Eating Index (HEI), ate fewer vegetables, ate less variety, and got less vitamin C and carotene. The study showed, though, that people with well-fitting dentures didn’t differ significantly from people with natural teeth.
Being deficient in these nutrients puts people at risk for a range of health conditions, from scurvy to dry skin.
However, a new study said that moving up to implant-supported dentures doesn’t improve nutrition over well-fitted traditional denture wearers. A new study, just published in December 2013, shows that whether people are given a new conventional denture or an implant overdenture does not affect their nutrition status. Why? The newly-fitted dentures gave quality fit which gave people adequate power to eat.
If your older, poorly-fitting dentures are making it hard for you to enjoy your food, perhaps you need new dentures. It doesn’t matter whether you choose implant-supported dentures or well-fitting dentures without implants, like The Denture Fountain of Youth®. Both can improve your ability to eat healthy, nutritious food.
