It’s a relatively small study and it hasn’t been confirmed yet, but its results are intriguing. One of the benefits of implant dentures is that they can stimulate the jawbone around them and preserve bone that would otherwise be lost. But now a new study suggests that under some circumstances, implant dentures could actually speed bone loss in some areas.
For this study, researchers looked at a small sample of 20 patients who were given implant-retained dentures and 9 patients who were given conventional dentures. They measured bite force for both sets of patients. In addition, CT scans were used to measure the amount of bone that was present at the beginning of the study, as well as one year after. CT scans were also used to measure soft tissue parameters like deformation of gum tissue and the amount of stress that the gums experienced.
Measurements showed that bite forces were nearly doubled for patients who had dental implants. And along with the doubled bite forces, pressure on the gum tissue doubled and along with it, bone loss.
Researchers speculate that the increase in forces in implant dentures can potentially accelerate bone loss in patients.
The results of this study are preliminary, and they can’t be fully trusted because the small study doesn’t give us a lot of confidence in its statistical power, but it seems to indicate something we’ve been talking about: the quality of implant dentures matters.
When you’re biting and chewing with implant dentures, the dental implants only take part of the bite force. The rest of it still has to be supported by your gum tissue. Poorly designed dentures don’t balance these forces well, resulting in excess force being put on your gums, which can speed bone loss.
Again, the results are preliminary, but it does seem that it’s important for you to choose implant dentures that are going to balance the forces in your mouth better.
