You may be familiar with the opulent beauty of Faberge’s famous jeweled eggs, but did you know the jewelers made dentures as well? The discovery of a set of partial dentures in a Russian archaeological dig highlights this important part of dental history.
Experts preparing to restore a historic church near St. Petersburg were investigating the church’s grounds to ensure no important history would be lost during renovation. They came across several important remains, including that of a Russian aristocrat with a remarkable denture made by the famous jewelers.
The identity of the dentures was established by experts: they had been made by a branch of Faberge working in a St. Petersburg hospital. The dentures’ metal parts are made from gold and platinum, while the teeth are made of multi-layered ceramics. Layering of the ceramic teeth helps to give them a more natural appearance. The dentures were made during the end of the 19th or the early part of the 20th century.
All church records were lost during the turbulent years that followed the woman’s death and burial, including the Bolshevik revolution and the Nazi invasion and blockade of St. Petersburg (then renamed “Leningrad”), so experts do not know the identity of the woman, but they hope to discover it. According to one archaeologist, “I believe there could be just a couple of dozen women at the time who could have afforded such a denture.”
The precision required for quality dentures demanded high levels of skill, which means that before dentistry became a highly trained and regulated profession, most of the best dentures were made by jewelers.
Plus, getting dentures that would not rust in the mouth meant working with noble metals like gold and platinum, and jewelers were the best trained experts in this type of metalworking.
The high level of craftsmanship that went into the making of the Faberge dentures is as remarkable as that which went into the making of the famous Faberge eggs. At Dental Excellence of Blue Bell, we put the same level of craftsmanship into the dentures we make to ensure that every patient gets dentures that are as beautiful and comfortable as possible.
