Falls are a serious risk in the elderly population. About one out of every three adults age 65 or more falls each year. Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury among people age 65 or more, and they can lead to serious consequences such as:
It’s important that seniors do what they can to prevent falls, and that includes getting functional dentures.
Studies have shown that dentures may reduce the fall risk among the elderly population. According to a study of geriatric patients with dementia, patients were less likely to fall if they had functional occlusion among their teeth. This included both natural teeth, full dentures, and partial dentures. The research compared people with natural tooth occlusion, denture occlusion, and no functional occlusion, contrasting “high fall” (2 or more falls in the previous year) with “low fall” (1 or no falls in the previous year):
In other words, people with natural teeth and with functional dentures had about the same rate of falls, while people without dentures or natural occlusion were much more likely to fall.
Another study was conducted on the mechanics of people walking with or without their dentures. Researchers studied 34 people who had lost all their teeth examining how they walked with or without dentures. When these people had their dentures in they had a reduced center of mass, making them more stable and were able to walk faster and more smoothly. Wearing dentures made them more stable whether walking or standing still.
A crucial point in both these studies is that the dentures must be “functional.” That is, they must fit properly in the jaws and must fit properly with one another. In the first study, “functional” occlusion was central to inclusion of subjects. In the second study, researchers either adjusted or replaced dentures that were worn out or ill-fitting.
If your dentures aren’t fitting properly, it’s not just an inconvenience, it may literally be a matter of life or death.
The Denture Fountain of Youth® may be the best suited dentures for this purpose because they are designed not only to replace your missing teeth, but to improve the function of all muscles in the jaw area, including those that assist your neck muscles in balancing your head.
