If you had teeth that caused a bad bite, you have likely been dealing with the related problems for a long time. You might have been suffering with an overbite, an underbite, crossbite or other problems. It might have been uncomfortable to bite and hard to chew. You may have been reluctant to smile.
But with dentures, we can fix your bite so that it’s not just more attractive–it’s more comfortable, too.
When you have a bad bite, you probably notice the impact it has on the normal functions of your mouth. Biting and chewing are challenging, and can sometimes result in jaw pain.
But you might not notice the other impacts of a bad bite that are outside your mouth. Neck pain, for example, can be due to a poor bite. In addition, tension headaches often result from poor muscle structure and weak muscles in the neck and jaw, which help support your head. You may be suffering from ear-related symptoms such as ringing in the ears and ear stuffiness or pain.
A bad bite can even impact your sleep. If your jaw isn’t in the right position when you sleep, your airway can narrow or collapse, which leads to snoring and a condition called sleep apnea. In sleep apnea, your airway closes off, basically choking you while you sleep. You have to wake up to start breathing again. Properly fitting dentures can help hold your airway open at night.
However, not all dentures are designed to address your bite issues. Cheap dentures are designed to just fit into your mouth, without regard to your bite. As a result, these dentures won’t fix your bite, and can even make it worse.
In making neuromuscular dentures, though, we measure the activity of your muscles and find the optimum true position of your bite. This will help relax your jaw muscles and help them work more efficiently. You will be able to chew more easily and you will find that neck pain, headaches, and ear problems may go away.
While not normally advised, if you are having sleep problems, sleeping with dentures in can reduce or eliminate sleep apnea.
