Bone resorption is when your body removes bone material. It occurs to astronauts in orbit, to seniors, and especially to denture wearers.
As bone is removed from your jawbone, your dentures may not fit as well, you may have to have them refitted more often, and you may be at an increased risk for jaw bone fractures. The Denture Fountain of Youth® is designed to try to overcome the limitations of traditional dentures to minimize the risk of resorption.
Bone resorption is a side effect of our body’s constant remodeling of bone. You may think your bones don’t change when they stop growing, but the truth is that your bones are constantly being reshaped and remodeled in response to our environment and our body’s needs.
Your body is constantly removing bone material and replacing it with new material. This helps your body, for example, add bone mass if you take up an exercise that demands stronger bones. It also helps the body remove bone mass where it thinks it isn’t needed. That’s why astronauts lose bone mass: their bodies think they don’t need it any more.
As we age, the process of adding bone slows down, resulting in a net loss of bone, which is the root cause of osteoporosis.
Your body may also raid your bones for calcium and other nutrients if it thinks you have a shortage.
The stimulation from your teeth tells your body that the bone the teeth are in, the alveolar bone, is needed. When your teeth are lost, your body may think the bone that supported them can go, too.
As this bone is removed, your alveolar ridge loses height, but also moves inward. As it does, traditional dentures move along with them, creating a sunken appearance around the mouth.
Your dentures may also cease to fit properly. This can happen quickly, and you may need to get more than one set of dentures a year.
FOY Dentures® don’t stimulate your jawbone directly the way that teeth or dental implants do. However, they can overcome limitations of traditional dentures that may encourage bone resorption:
Traditional dentures often result in uneven force on your jawbone, so you may experience bone retained in some placed, with extreme resorption in other places.
Because FOY Dentures® fit better, you are more likely to use them to chew. Chewing stimulates your jawbone, encouraging your body to retain more of it.
When you can eat more foods, you are likely to have better nutrition, which means your body is less likely to raid your bones for resources.
We don’t yet know the magnitude of these benefits for the average user. If you would like to learn more about the benefits of The Denture Fountain of Youth® in Philadelphia, please call 610-272-0828 for an appointment at Dental Excellence of Blue Bell today.
